Karl Schutt trained as a visual artist and instructor in the fine arts graduating with a
Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Manitoba, and with a Master of Arts in Art History from the University of British Columbia.
He has been a Fellow of the British Gemmological Society, a member of the Canadian Gemmological Society and a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America since 1980
In 1975 he began gem cutting and over the years has perfected the art of gem faceting and stone repairs. He has taught this art for the past 15 or more years to students locally and from places as far away as India and Kenya.
He still is an avid student of the Fine Arts, working regularly in watercolours and pastels, sculpting in marbles and iron , and in the fine crafts with special interests in precious gems and metals, particularly sterling silver.
Over the years Karl has studied with such well known metalsmiths as Lois Betteridge, Harold O’Connor, Heikke Seppa, Sandra Noble Goss, Andrew Goss, and Michael Letki.
Karl for years has taught the jewellery and lapidary arts as well as drawing and painting through Continuing Education Programs at Algonquin College, the Ottawa Carleton District Board of Education and the Nepean Visual Arts Centre.
